my take on malaysia engineering education

August 9th, 2009 by sarizal

i gave a comment to one of my friend regarding this subject in her blog, so ..it might worth sharing with others too…

…………………………………………………………………………………………………………

Salam

hi aini,

singgah lalu and reading ur blog..probably late but anyway congratulations on ur achievement so far!!

talking about engineering education ..one of my favorite subject, indeed….here are some points i think worth sharing based on my experience as engineer and lecturer at uitm..

-malaysian Uni, i think are designing their syllabus way to late than their counterpart especially from develop nation, and the sad part is, some are mere follower than being a leader, for instance if UK Uni is combining thermo and fluid subject for some reason/s then our local u will follow this pattern..i mean there’s nothing wrong with it if you got solid reasoning behind that but when i ask what was the reason/s the answer was they(UK U) have made it several years so we need the follow the pattern ..what im trying to say is why are we being a mere follower and not a leader..can’t we done some survey outside to improve our syllabus?

-a lot of research done by engineering students (postgrade- ) i would say is kind of too much theoretical without practicality value/s or too little on that aspect ….the reasons could be; no emphasizing on it, money constraint and too some extent because the research title was given by supervisor.

All the talking about getting this students/mind/research as driver to the nation economy is merely slogan if there is no incentive to develop real relationship between them (students) and industry…University can claim that they have relationship with this ABC comp etc etc but the real benefit of the industry-uni relationship can only be reap, if only these working level people is in communication and sharing mode…

Facility wise i dont think we are too lack..but of course there are still room for improvement

On the lecturers..the backbone of the uni, i really think that:

1) teaching hours need to be reduce..to allow them doing more research works or admins works

2) force them to join engineering professional bodies, iem or bem for instance ..the reason is to get them mingle around with people from industry

3) take more lecturers who has experience and contact in industry..this will expedite the working level relationship with industry i mention just now..

4) Last but not least make them realize that the way they teach students at class have significance impact toward students interest and performance,,do not fear to challenge students (encourage them if can) to ask questions.. BTW dont get me started on my experience at Kuittho, some of them are good though..like En Fahmi, we need more people like him

enough for now…i hope u success in ur future endeavour..

salam

parking ticket and hadapi dengan senyuman

August 5th, 2009 by sarizal

i woke up late and decided just to take day off. Doing nothing i got bored and decided to go to PJ, IEM building to be precise… go there and pay my six sigma and project management course.

U know pj is always bustling with cars and to get a car park is kind of tough here but i was lucky to get a car park just in front of that IEM building

(im using the power of mind, imagining there is vacant car park, and its work! but that will be another story or you can get an advise from me on that..haha)

So thinking that i just want to go inside that building for payment purpose, which i believed wouldnt take longer than 10 mins and considering that i dont have any change.. i decided not to pay the parking ticket…cut the crap… i stuck in the building for like 40 mins because of my curiosity had keep me busy reading all those ads and announcement after payment matter is settle, and by the time i realized that i have spent more time than i should.. it was too late… the MPPJ officer was already there and printing out my “BONUS” ticket!! the sad part is the execution was in front of my eyes…from the distance of course..

Tried to negotiate but u know, i dont have valid or concrete excuse.. so i decided to be responsible citizen(gempak kan??) and willingly take up the ticket ..tell u what the figure is RM100!! damn…kind of regret now..suddenly DEWA song is echoed air on my head…

(by the way search concert was not up to my expectation so i choose DEWA songs instead plus skrg tgh mood2 sedey huhuhuhu..)

apa kejadahnya!!

Hadapi dengan senyuman
Semua yang terjadi
Biar terjadi….
Hadapi dengan tenang jiwa
Semua… kan baik baik saja

Bila ketetapan tuhan
Sudah ditetapkan
Tetaplah sudah….
Tak ada yang bisa merubah
Dan takkan bisa berubah

Reff
Relakanlah saja ini
Bahwa semua yang terbaik
Terbaik untuk kita semua
Menyerahlah untuk menang

~so dude please pay ur parking ticket and be responsible (now that responsible!!)~~

cant sleep and november rain

July 30th, 2009 by sarizal

i cant sleep and not sure why…had a meeting with Uitm VC today and im kind of smilin when thinking how my club president call him..Tan Sri Dato Sri every time he want to address him…thank god he’s not calling him something like Tan Sri Dato Sri Proffesor Haji (what else?) otherwise we will wasted 10 minutes out of 1 hour on his pangkat and name only hahaha ..

we are all thinking about how formal the meeting will be..at least me.. but it turn out this pakcik misai is quite friendly and have high sense of humor too..

nothing much being discussed considering he already knew things that we brought up..anyway when wrap up the meeting.. i made a joke about his misai and asking tips how did he take care of it..the answer was something else though ahaha

ok still cant sleep and i’m googling at 2 am looking for a november rain video clip but couldnt find the original clip due to copyright issue in youtube now…

the chorus line is fuc*** significant…

never mind …at least i have the lyric..disappointed though..net world has imposed trading regulation..no more free entertainment..

chio…am forcing my self to sleep…2:25am on friday..

day after vc made a joke on B1N1 and when November rain clip cant be play…

November Rain

When I look into your eyes
I can see a love restrained
But darlin’ when I hold you
Don’t you know I feel the same

‘Cause nothin’ lasts forever
And we both know hearts can change
And it’s hard to hold a candle
In the cold November rain

We’ve been through this auch a long long time
Just tryin’ to kill the pain

But lovers always come and lovers always go
An no one’s really sure who’s lettin’ go today
Walking away

If we could take the time
to lay it on the line
I could rest my head
Just knowin’ that you were mine
All mine
So if you want to love me
then darlin’ don’t refrain
Or I’ll just end up walkin’
In the cold November rain

Do you need some time…on your own
Do you need some time…all alone
Everybody needs some time…
on their own
Don’t you know you need some time…all alone

I know it’s hard to keep an open heart
When even friends seem out to harm you
But if you could heal a broken heart
Wouldn’t time be out to charm you

Sometimes I need some time…on my
own
Sometimes I need some time…all alone
Everybody needs some time…
on their own
Don’t you know you need some time…all alone

And when your fears subside
And shadows still remain
I know that you can love me
When there’s no one left to blame
So never mind the darkness
We still can find a way
‘Cause nothin’ lasts forever
Even cold November rain

Don’t ya think that you need somebody
Don’t ya think that you need someone
Everybody needs somebody
You’re not the only one
You’re not the only one

being prepared..

July 22nd, 2009 by sarizal

one thing i really respect my bos is how he prepare things for incoming event, for instance how he prepare our team for customer visit to our workshop..normally he will handle everything and divide all the works among ourselves but this time around he pass the baton to my colleague to ensure everything is smooth..it never occurred to me that this kind of thing will need you to be creative and try to think every aspects of the event, as everything will have impact to your image you need to be careful..for example if you forgot to calculate how many car will comes and your car park lot can not accommodate every visitor cars then they will need to walk far then they should, and this will give negative view even before the meeting started.. so the key is to call everyone and try to list down every aspect that you think will influence the outcome of that event things like; what is the suitable food, does chairs in the meeting room enough?, projector at meeting room functional? or your welcoming slide have correct visitor name and according to hierarchy looks like insignificant but believe me its have big impact. so make sure you prepare accordingly…

Tioman

July 14th, 2009 by sarizal

I’ll put on hold first a second part of my trip to Italy instead will share my holiday trip to tioman for 4 days with my  parents, sis and my nieces recently.

It was only 3 days after i arrived at Malaysia from Italy that i departed to Tioman so it was pretty tiring plus am not adjusted to Malaysia time yet, it was my father who drive all the way from KL and am sleeping at the back. I’m kind of disappointed because I never go through the road that we taken on that day before which is KL- Kuala Pilah – Bahau – Muadzam Shah –Kuala Rompin – Mersing road.

Ferry from Mersing to Tioman will cost you RM 35 one way, and for car park you need to pay RM 10 per day which is reasonable rate for me though I was thinking the ferry cost should be cheaper especially for children who need to pay RM 30. Eight years ago when I visited Tioman with my friends it cost me RM 45 but it was speed boat and not ferry ( I still remember we call it BAX gang since Bosol, my friend who owned the car that was victimized for the trip, the plat car is BAX ***) not sure if speed boat is still available nowadays, anyway the obvious differences between these two are travel time and comfortable rate. For those who are not really akin with bumpy waves and have sea sick I strongly suggest you take the ferry.

The ferry will go to several jetty in Tioman and u better make sure which is which, otherwise u probably end up taking a sea taxi which is not that cheap honey.. Last time it was Tekek area only that has proper Jetty I mean a concrete jetty and the other area/teluk depending on hand made jetty from “kayu” but now most of the area/teluk already have this modern jetty which by the way damaging choral reef during its construction.

Note :- Tekek is one of area in Tioman & the most important as school, police station, airport, business centre and Kem Dalam Negeri are all located here..(yes they have KDN building here!! Not sure why though) and before I forgot tycoon Vicent Tan resort, that Berjaya resort is also located here and yes am staying here hehehe complimentary from my sister of course…she has this Berjaya vacation club membership…is not affordable for me to stay at this kind of resort nope esp after trip to Rome which cost me a lot..damn…

Ok if you decided to stay at Tekek here are other options Peladang chalet, Kg Tekek Chalet, and chalet nearby to Tmn Laut. If you don’t know where to spend your money or perhaps u are in honeymoon and money is the second thing then the Berjaya resort will be great option, the biggest marks they have it here for me is the scenery itself.. imagine golf course next to sandy beach wonderful isn’t…? it will be perfect place to set up the mood with your spouse..ok that kind off the topic hehe.. The only disadvantage if you stay here is, you are kind of isolated from the Tekek village or should I call it town..the resort is very big and too far from Tekek town nevertheless Berjaya is providing shuttle service to Tekek, so is not really a big deal..u only need to check what time are they going to Tekek and normally its reflect with boat and airplane arrival.

Here are some of the things that you can do at Tekek and Berjaya resort…

1-snorkle sampai mabuk kat tmn laut

2- snorkle at pulau batu near to dive centre in Berjaya, for note they (Berjaya) are providing free boat ride to that pulau batu everyday at 3pm.

3- Eat at peladang restaurant which has one of the finest ikan kerapu masak 3rasa, according to my standard btw..

4- Watching live band at beach nearby to main building of Berjaya resort

5- Trekking to other beach/Teluk such as Juara pantai…this one is good

6- Go to turtle sanctuary

7- Buy fresh fish from fisherman or kaki pancing and do barbecue if you staying at Berjaya or Peladang they should have this bbq set

5- Just enjoy ur stay here buddy… watch stars and moon for instance… for those who thinking problem like why am I not married yet.. this therapy will help..kiddin!!! u probably end up feel more sad hahahah

OK I that’s should be enough tips on activities to do when visit tioman esp at tekek area

Call me if you need more advise..am for sure will visit here again esp after noticing out that food prices are no longer expensive like before..

I decided to log my trip to Florence and Poligno for future reference and probably to my friends that will visit here someday, I try to cover as much details as I can, which will depend on my limited memory capacity.

Day 1

24/6/09 –mas time

I arrived at klia around 10pm and yazid is already there.

Flight was on time and I had a late supper of beef sauce and nasi lemak during breakfast. Am not interested of watching movie as my body was too tired and decided to sleep

Day 1 or 2?

24/6/09- Frankfurt airport

Arrived at Frankfurt German, at first we were planned to go out and see the city as we had 6 hours window time prior to flight to Florence, but the confusion to find out the transit terminal and the damn tight security plus long time to queue have made us to cancel the plan.

I am quite disappointed as I believe Frankfurt is an interesting place to explore. Hope the journey back will allow us to go out. Here are some tips if you reached here.

-Germans peoples in particular the imegresen personnel are not so friendly compared to Malaysian, however if you see it from another sideMalaysian security is way too loose compared to them, that’s way I guess data of Altantuya entering this country can be deleted..ok not so related..While waiting for your turn ready to pull out your laptop from the bag, ur belt and whatever inside ur pockets so that u ready for inspection faster..

- make sure you not bringing any liquid together with you unless if its less than 100ml, u don’t want to lose you new buy soap like me…mind you is a Palmolive thermal spa …I look with sad while them throw my thermal spa in the bin…hey im just transit here man..

-Don’t be shock if imegresen throwing you passport! again they not really friendly..

-Don’t be shock if you need go through more than one luggage inspection

-The airport though have the aerotrain like Klia, from main terminal to transit terminal, u still need to take a quite a long walk hence if u carry heavy bag it will not help.

-While waiting at transit terminal (I think they divide gate/terminal based on flight company like my case is Lufthansa termina) this is what u can do :

1-take free news papers off course for reading not for the sake of taking free newspaper at least u can read some propaganda while waiting for ur flight

2- Beverages is kind of expensive here, the coca cola from vending machine will cost u Euro2.5, and considering that ur currency is on the lower site of the world currency, u can take copy or tea for free at coffee maker. As it is free u need to wait for a while before water start pouring out…

Here are things I notice about Frankfurt airport..

1-Though not busy as Heatrow airport where u can see people is sleeping on the floor.. is still have more people compared to KLIA which design to cater something like 250 millions peoples but now accommodating around 25 millions only or 10% of its full capability.. ok my point is we are under utilizing our airport or probably we are overspent on our airport..

2-Frankfurt airport is not user friendly as KLIA though, which is a good point that KLIA has..Frankfurt has a long wing that will need u to walk around 10-20 minutes not included passport checking and security check hence if you only have 4-6 hours window time before ur next flight it’s not a good idea to visit the city

3-The airport really busy and i noticed that they park the planes like arrangement in car park..i mean the planes really closed from one to another

4-As the airport really busy ur flight could be postponed to 20-30 minutes

Reach Florence

I reach Florence around 2 pm local time. It’s a good idea if u can ask window seat, as the view during flight subhanallah.. magnificent…on the sunny day u can see clearly the Alps Mountains

Florance it’s a small town that attracted tourist every year, the town used to be a capital for Italy during renaissance time according to my Italian counterpart..so if he’s making up story u probably get lied too.

We decided to go out to see the city centre where buildings from renaissance day were build. Bus here using pre buy ticket system so before ur embarking ur journey make sure u already buy the ticket.. and the ticket instead of per journey will indicate time, for instance 1 ticket will cost u Euro 1.2 in return u will get 70 minutes travel time. So if u plan to be in the city not more than 30-40 minutes then u wouldn’t need to buy another ticket.

We reach the city centre around 4pm and were lucky to get company from Serbian couple Yelena and errr…..ok I forgot his name is too hard to remember ..so they show us around until one of the biggest attraction the dome/church and we start walk by our own..u can find a lot of household names of branded design here such as Prada, Gucci etc..am not that interested on that kind of items.

Before dawn my Italian counterpart- Giovanni pick us up and I had a life time experience bicycling around Florence and on the night Giovanni bring us to the parade where they play firewoks to celebrate st john who according to the Florence people is the Saint that protecting the city, but the sad part is I left my camera in the hotel..damn..talking about bicycling around Florence it’s really nice experienced but i’m  not suggesting u to do the same without getting Italian company..u know they drive on the right side..so it’s pretty tough to adjust ur mind at first..

End of day 1 in Florence…

procrastinate

April 28th, 2009 by sarizal

It’s been a busy month for me considering i need to submit students marks and grade, finish up sylabus for my diploma students and not to mention bunch of works at Sapura and master research works. I still think i can cope with all of that and the proof out loud here…writing a blog instead journal as requested by my supervisor..ok the point here is what is the priority? damn i’m having a trouble because of the procrastinate problem..ok for those who not really get my point…just plan your work ahead…

procrastinate wont do any good for you..got it??

Fanatic and breakfast

February 8th, 2009 by sarizal

I love Saturday because u can laid back and have a long breakfast time, i took my breakfast at pkns yesterday and the table next to me seems to have a hot debate on recent situation at Perak and i willingly eardrops. Well obviously there are two sides, the one that agreed with the topple by BN and the one that disagree….i dun want to go into details on the discussions part but the point raised by one of them make me interested ..so he said, we malay are to fanatics involve in brawl over politics power, being a yes men to our leader regardless illogical of their action, held the demonstration which is not actually needed, discussing politics to much whereas economic power are held by other races so on and so forth ..he sounds reasonably intellectual to me ..that debate go on for almost 1 hour and the last point raised by the same person just now make me scuff… he said whatever Anwar did he will support..well that sound familiar isn’t?? –walk ur talk bro luckily I just eardrop only

Opps yeargh the breakfast was good and it turns out to be my lunch…

aku yg x sure

Situation 1

Annual financial company shows that we not making profit yet..ah ha for 5th consecutive years..i bet if its not because of we are under big holding company our company its already in grave now hahahah

Had a talk with my superior yesterday discussing our fate next year as no job seems to be coming in ..

i found out that …we not sure what will happen

Situation 2

I love the feeling of appreciation from my students every time I finish my class..i think most of them will thank me…am not sure whether I gave a good lesson or its just their way of flattered me out “bodekla” hahaha

I guess because of their experience PLK students (part time students) are working peoples they know how to deal with peoples some of them are older than me..experiences pays and sometime a lot better than ur skills…I mean skills in handling people are far more important than technical skills or ur knowledge..research by social science people prove that u know..

Conclusion- am not sure whether i’m a good lecturer

Situation 3

Every time I meet Dean he will ask me when I’ll finish my Master and I cant give him a concrete answer in other words considering my work and research rate I bet even 2 more years will not enough hahaha …he wanted me to become a lecturer here and take TPM scheme but im not sure whether that will be a good option..since my fees is covered by Sapura this semester I don’t think is a good idea to resigned this year… the problem is Sapura will cover this semester only and am not so sure what happen next term..most probably I need to fork out my own money back..shit I want to save my money ma!!

Conclusions

- Not sure to resign or not

-TPM scheme??not sure good or not good

- Finish master? Not sure,,can or cannot

Apsal byk sgt unsure thing dlm hidup aku nieh weh??and the list just keep grow dr benda nak makan ngan isu nak kawin,,,hampeh…!!! Tulun!!!!

Pembaziran

Congrats Dr Asri not so easy to stand up against gov in gov paper i guess..ermmm

Not so easy to become leader ek?

Agama bukan mengkhayalkan orang miskin

Kemudian Allah memberikan kurniaan kepadamu lalu diangkat engkau menjadi seorang raja.

Tanggungjawab

Kenaikan harga minyak menaikkan harga barang. Orang berpendapatan rendah menjadi mangsa.
